Why do doctors give this medicine?
Fentanyl patches are used to treat people with serious pain who will need painkillers around the clock for a long time and who can not be helped by other medicines. Talk to your doctor before you stop using fentanyl patches. Most likely, your doctor will slowly lower your dose. If you stop using fentanyl patches all of a sudden, you may go through withdrawal. Call your doctor if you have any of these withdrawal symptoms: restlessness, teary eyes, a runny nose, yawning, sweating, chills, muscle pain, large pupils (black circles in the center of the eyes), irritability, anxiety, backache, joint pain, weakness, stomach cramps, trouble falling asleep or staying asleep, nausea, loss of appetite, vomiting, diarrhea, fast heartbeat, or fast breathing.
Do not use a fentanyl patch that has been cut, broken, or changed in any way. If the patches are cut or broken, you may get most or all of the medicine at once instead of slowly over 3 days. This could lead to very bad things, like an overdose or even death.
You can take a bath, swim, or shower with a fentanyl patch on. If the patch comes off while doing these things, throw it away in the right way. Then make sure your skin is dry and put on a new patch. After you put on the new patch, leave it there for 72 hours.
A fentanyl patch can be put on the chest, back, upper arms, or sides of the waist. If you are putting the patch on a child or someone who can not think straight, put it on their upper back to make it harder for them to take it off and put it in their mouth. Choose a place on your face that is smooth and has no hair. Do not put the patch on parts of the body that move a lot or on skin that has been exposed to radiation or is sensitive, very oily, broken out, irritated, cut, broken, or otherwise hurt. If there is hair on the skin, cut it as close to the skin as possible with scissors. Do not shave that spot.

  1. Clean the area where you plan to apply the patch with clear water and pat it completely dry. Do not use any soaps, lotions, alcohols, or oils.

  8. When it is time to change your patch, peel off the old patch and apply a new patch to a different skin area.
  9. After you remove your patch, fold it in half with the sticky sides together and flush it down a toilet.
